Excerpt from

OVER THE RAINBOW

THE BELL sounded to signal the end of the school day.

At last.

Dorian let out a huge sigh of relief. He quickly dismissed his boisterous pupils and logged himself off the computer on his desk by the time they’d all noisily exited the classroom.

God! What a day!

Anyone who thought this job was easy should try teaching Pride and Prejudice to a class of fifteen-year-old boys. And damn it, he still had the bloody staff meeting to attend before he got to go home.

Dorian scooped up his teaching notes and a pile of books he hadn’t managed to mark at lunchtime and strode out of the classroom barely missing two boys who ran past him. “Walk in the corridor!” he instructed the rapidly fleeing flash of emerald green uniforms, but to little effect.

Dorian sighed again and looked down at the books in his arms.

Yet another fun-filled night with hardly any time to relax.

He wished he’d believed the person who’d told him his social life would be almost non-existent during his first year of teaching. Marking, planning, staff meetings, talking to parents, in addition to after-school activities two or three times a week. Bring back college days any time. At least he’d had something he could laughingly call a sex life then.

Thank God it was the half-term break next week. Time to draw breath for a few days at least.

Dorian slowed his pace as he passed the adjacent classroom and glanced hopefully inside. His search was rewarded. Catching sight of the object of his desire made his stomach flutter.

“Hey, Dorian. Have you got a minute before the staff meeting starts?”

Dorian flushed a little and smiled. “Sure.” He glanced appreciatively over his mentor, Mr Leonard. “I wanted to ask you a few questions about my lesson observation tomorrow if you’ve got time.”

Mr Leonard, Head of the English department, was everything Dorian wished he could be—and not just because of the expert control he had over the pupils. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and most of his exposed skin was covered in thick, dark hair that Dorian spent most nights dreaming about; he often imagined what the hairs would feel like if he ran his hands over Mr Leonard’s skin and what this hunk of a man would look like naked.

“That’s fine, D. Let’s grab a cuppa and talk on the way.”

Dorian nodded and shifted the books in his arms so most of his suddenly bulging groin was now covered. The very thought of calling Mr Leonard ‘Sir’ was enough to harden his traitorous dick at the most inopportune moments. He usually thought of Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett at times like these, but those thoughts often turned to Mr Bingley and a wet-shirted Mr Darcy, and he was no better off.

Dorian did his best to concentrate on their conversation, focusing on Mr Leonard’s eyes and lips as they discussed his lesson for class 5B the following day. “And I want you to speak up in the staff meeting today….”

“Yes, Mr Leonard.”

“Look, Dorian, it’s about time you called me Mark. We’ve been working together for over six weeks now.”

Dorian smiled again, his cock pulsing when his name fell from the older man’s lips. He’d never liked the name his parents had given him and had to suffer being called everything from Dory to Ryan in his teen years, but hearing Mark say it sent a shiver down his spine every time. “Sure. If that’s okay with you, Mark.”

Mr Leonard—Mark—paused as they approached the staffroom and huffed. “Of course, it is but not in front of the little Munchkins, though.” Dorian chuckled at Mark’s nickname for the pupils.

Length: 75,750 words/303 pages

Skater Boy is a standalone story in the Hot Off the Ice series.

Blurb

In a world that measures success in dollars, how do you put a price on happiness?

Love, marriage, and a baby carriage. It’s all Alex Staunton has ever wanted. Well, that and an Olympic medal for figure skating. The medal he got. The rest of it – not so much.

When his most recent poor decision comes to a door-slamming end, Alex moves into the house of his best friend, Thunder starting goalie, Sergei Pergov. But when tragedy strikes, giving Sergei custody of the twins he fathered confidentially, Alex’s problems take a backseat to the needs of two infants, and Alex vows to be the best fake-dad and house-husband he can be.

Sergei is dazzled by the way Alex makes managing all the craziness look as easy as doing a triple-axel. As their friendship grows even deeper, Sergei realizes he doesn’t want to imagine a life without Alex in it. Alex is the one who makes their house a home; his love makes them a family. How can Sergei make Alex understand he’s worth everything?

Skater Boy is a story about falling in love with your best friend. It contains discussions about baby poop, day drinking, girls’ night out, and the purchase of a mini-van.

It was funny how much one kiss could change everything. Well, kissing and whatever else he could get away with. Sergei loved finding ways around the rules or seeing how much he could get away with while still technically staying within bounds.

Alex had typed up a list of the rules and taped them to the inside of the door that held Sergei’s coffee mugs and tea cups. “This way I know we’ll see it at least once a day.”

“In case I forget?” Sergei pulled Alex’s hand toward him, tracing light patterns over his wrist and palm in the same way Alex had tortured him the other night.

“Bastard,” Alex said, yanking his hand away. He darted in for a quick kiss. “In case I forget.”

Then last night after dinner, he’d come up behind Alex in the kitchen while he was washing dishes, and keeping his hands above the waist and over the clothes, lifted up Alex’s gorgeous hair and kissed the back and sides of his neck until Alex begged him to touch him. “Just a little. Please? Just my stomach.”

“Rules say no hands under clothing,” Sergei said, voice heavy with regret. “You made rules.”

Without another word, Alex slid out from under Sergei. Grabbing a pen from the junk drawer, he stomped the few feet to the cabinet, opened the cabinet, and crossed off the word ‘clothing.’ He wrote ‘pants’ above it, handwriting sloppy.

Slamming the door, he marched back to Sergei. “Better?”

Sergei yanked Alex against him, face to face this time. He slid his hands up the back of Alex’s shirt. His skin was softer than he had ever imagined and so warm. “Much better,” he growled, then pushed Alex up against the counter. They kissed until Sergei’s lips were numb.

Colt Jager never knew what happened to the parents who abandoned him, and he never cared–until he inherited their ghoulish secret.

Raised as a human who had no idea he was anything but a blue-collar construction worker until the night of his 25th birthday, Colt finds it hard to adjust to life in the Kinship, a hidden world woven discreetly into human society.

After a grisly encounter with his true nature, Colt meets a family of human-friendly ghouls who teach him that there’s a way to be inhuman without being inhumane. But things get complicated when he realizes that the “wolf attack” responsible for killing his boyfriend’s brother was actually committed by a ghoul on the hunt.

When an elite family of especially monstrous ghouls called Alphas threatens the man he loves, Colt will have to lie to Jason to keep him safe. Can a predator ever truly be a hero, or will the man he loves become his prey?

“You could help people lots of ways. I just don’t see why you have to pick the one that could get you killed.”

“I’ll be pushing papers for the DA, not infiltrating a crystal meth ring,” Jason shot back.

The argument had been brewing for some time, and Colt knew that he didn’t stand a shot at winning now that they’d finally gotten around to it, but he could hardly take the news that his boyfriend had just signed up for the most dangerous job in the city sitting down.

“And what happens if some psycho gets pissed at your boss for putting him in jail and you get caught in the crossfire?”

“Then I’ll have a hard time holding water.”

“I’m glad you find this so funny.”

“Colt,” Jason pleaded, taking Colt’s face in his hands. “It was a joke.”

“I guess I just don’t find the very real possibility of losing you all that funny.”

Jason’s face fell. “I’m sorry,” he said softly. “But I can’t give up on my dream. Not even for you.”

Colt clenched his jaw. “Why is this so important to you? Why does it have to be this field?”

Jason settled back against the couch with a heavy sigh. “You remember how it was when Luca was killed. We all spent months reeling, grasping for something to make sense of what happened. I’d listen to my dad reaming out Fish and Wildlife reps for hours on end, demanding reports and explanations for how a lone wolf in an area where there wasn’t supposed to be anything other than coyotes and fisher cats just showed up and killed his son. It made no sense, and we desperately needed it to, even though we knew logic wouldn’t bring him back. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized there are some things in this world you just can’t make sense of. Things that you can’t explain no matter how hard you try, and even if you could, it wouldn’t change anything. But there are tragedies that can be explained, and there are families out there who suffer needlessly until someone finds the answers. I want to be one of the people who finds those answers, Colt. I don’t want anyone else to feel the way my family did if it can be helped.”

Colt’s stomach churned as Jason spoke. The conviction in Jason’s voice alone was enough to soften his anger, but more than that, it was the doubt it caused in Colt that unsettled him.

What if it hadn’t been a wolf that attacked Luca, after all? Colt had never questioned the official narrative as a preteen, but knowing what he knew now as an adult, “animal attack” rang as nothing more than a callous euphemism. If one of his own kind had killed Luca, keeping this secret about his own identity was more than just a lie. It was a betrayal.

“Please tell me you understand,” Jason said, searching Colt’s face.

“I do.” Colt cleared his throat. “I’m not gonna pretend like I’m happy about it, but I get it. If this is what you want, I won’t try to stop you, but I am going to ask you to be careful.”

Jason smiled, leaning in for another kiss. “And that’s where you’re different from my family.”

“I would hope I’m different in a few more ways than that,” Colt teased, pushing Jason back against the sofa.

Jason laughed. “Well, kissing you is a lot more fun than kissing great-aunt Gertrude. Less stubble.”

Colt shuddered. “You know how to paint a picture.”

“I could paint a better one if you come camping with me,” Jason purred, winding a strand of Colt’s hair around his finger. “Please?”

Colt sighed. “How am I supposed to say no to that?”

“You’re not,” Jason whispered against his lips.

Colt moaned as Jason’s knee slipped between his thighs and the friction of their jeans made his grinding pure torture. Colt reached underneath Jason’s shirt, tracing the lines of his abs down to the sharp cut of his hips. His hand drifted lower just as the phone on the coffee table buzzed.

“Ignore it,” Colt murmured, capturing Jason’s lips. The phone kept buzzing.

“They’re not giving up,” Jason gasped, breaking the kiss. “Maybe you should answer it.”

“Fuck whoever it is.”

“What if it’s the secret girlfriend you’ve been running off with lately?” Jason asked in a teasing tone. Colt could tell there was a hint of genuine suspicion in it.

“Fuck her, too.”

Jason gave his shoulder a playful shove and reached for the phone. “Hello?” His face went blank and Colt sat up sharply. How he hated technology. “No, sorry. I’ll put him on.” He pushed his finger against the speaker and whispered, “It’s the Sheriff.

Colt winced, taking the phone. “Sorry. I should take this.”

Jason’s eyes were full of questions, but he said nothing as Colt stood and crossed the room, pressing the phone to his ear. “Sheriff Venson. Hi. What can I do for you?”

“I assume that was the mysterious boyfriend Susan’s always speaking of,” Roland said in a dry tone. “Does he know?”

“Not at all, sir. Did you need me to answer any more questions about Chuck?”

That seemed to satisfy Jason’s curiosity, or at least convince him to pretend like he was interested in his own phone.

Roland chuckled. “A word of advice. If you care about him, keep it that way.”

“That’s what I was planning on.”

“I won’t keep you. Just wanted to check in and make sure Wilbur hasn’t tried contacting you again.”

“No, I haven’t heard anything but I’ll let you know if he calls.”

“Good man, Colt. Keep your head down,” the Sheriff said before hanging up.

“That was about Chuck?” Jason asked, leaning over the back of the couch.

“Just a few follow-up questions.”

“Follow-up?” Jason frowned. “They questioned you about Chuck’s death?”

Shit. “Uh, yeah. It was routine.”

“For an animal attack?”

Colt could see the wheels turning in Jason’s head and knew he needed to stop the investigation train before it ran off the tracks. “Yeah. I guess his wife is insisting on it. Can’t bring herself to accept what happened,” he said, cringing internally. He felt like scum before the words were even out of his mouth.

“Poor thing,” Jason said sadly.

“Yeah. So,” Colt said, clearing his throat. “Where were we?”

“I was trying to convince you to go with me on that camping trip.”

“If your mind’s made up, so is mine,” Colt said with a shrug. “I’m not letting you go out there alone.”

Jason scowled, but there was more amusement in his gaze than irritation. “I’m not sure I like the new caveman Colt.”

“Get used to it, he’s not goin’ anywhere,” Colt half-teased, leaning over the couch to kiss Jason. “Especially not if you’re working for the DA.”

“I haven’t even gotten the internship yet.”

“Oh, you’ll get it. You get everything you want.”

Jason grinned. “That’s very true. As a matter of fact, there’s something I want you to give me right now.”

It just so happened to be something Colt was more than willing to give.

Hayden Knight’s job is simple. All he has to do is sell his father’s latest invention to Tate South, the Acquisitions Manager of the biggest supplier of the best in cutting-edge technology. The virtual assistant is designed to help the user in all aspects of their life, but Hayden views the holographic helper as nothing but a nuisance. Keeping his annoyance to himself is relatively easy until a major technical glitch causes Tate to see and hear Hayden’s assistant.

Hayden and Tate are thrown together while they try to figure out what has happened, and the chemistry between them is electric. Hayden soon finds that convincing Tate that he needs a Holo-Assistant isn’t as important to him as persuading him he needs Hayden in his life.

Excerpt

Hayden finally gave up on sleep at half past six, got out of bed and stumbled to the bathroom. His assistant followed him.
Unfortunately, there was no way for Hayden to turn off the assistant for a little privacy. The first time it had hovered beside him while he took a piss he had tried to shut it down. That was the moment he discovered the assistant was a permanent fixture in his life. The only way to remove it would be to undergo surgery to remove the neural implant, something his father wouldn’t allow until he had thoroughly tested it.
The Holo-Assistant, a highly advanced piece of technology was the brainchild of his father and Hayden was one of the guinea-pigs testing it for him. A program designed to manage all aspects of a person’s life, from scheduling appointments at work to ensuring a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. It was every app a person could ever want, all rolled into one holographic assistant. If Hayden had known what he was letting himself in for, he would have thought twice about it. Not that his father had given him much choice. As head of the marketing department for Knight Inventions, it was Hayden’s job to sell the product and his father believed that the only way for Hayden to truly believe his sales pitch was for him to have experienced the wonders of the invention for himself.
Hayden tried to ignore the holographic nuisance as he stepped into the shower and closed his eyes.
A loud groan coming from outside the cubicle caused Hayden to jump and bang his elbow on the tiles. “What the hell?”
He rubbed his eyes and eased open the shower door. Hovering in front of him was a holo-screen playing porn. The actors were giving it their all, moaning and groaning loud enough to wake the dead. His assistant stood beside the screen with a stupid smile on its face.
“Shut down film,” Hayden snapped. There was a time and a place for porn and this unholy hour of the morning wasn’t it.
“Would you like an alternative?” the assistant asked, bringing up a long list of titles and stills from what appeared to be every porn film Hayden had ever watched and more besides.
“No, I bloody don’t,” Hayden replied.
“I believe you’ll find it will assist you in maintaining your schedule.”
“Excuse me? What schedule are you talking about now?”
“As part of maintaining your well-being I have allotted you time to masturbate.”
Hayden goggled at the assistant. “What did you say?”
“I have allocated you time to masturbate,” it obligingly confirmed. “With the assistance of a film of your liking it is estimated that you will require two minutes for this task.”
“Oh for crying out loud.” Hayden slammed the door, shaking the glass, and shut out the frustrating hologram. He wasn’t sure what annoyed him the most, the fact that the wretched program had allocated him time to wank, or that it had only allowed him two minutes for the job.

Sometimes life will surprise you

Sometimes it will disappoint you

Sometimes it will kick you in the balls

Sometimes it will make you so happy you feel like you can fly

And sometimes, just sometimes, it will do all of those things.

The kick in the balls, both literally and figuratively, happened to Noah Pierce a long time ago.  Ten years to be exact, when, to cap off a brutal and horrendous four-year relationship with the man who claimed to love him, that man buried a butcher knife in his side.  It was the final wound in a seemingly endless cycle of bruises, cuts, breaks, sprains and other things that sent him to the hospital.  He thought he was going to die.  But when he opened his eyes in that ER room and saw a stranger with kind yet determined eyes looking back at him and with his boyfriend nowhere in sight, Noah knew that life was going to change for him.  And it did.

For ten years he was stronger, he was better, he was……hollow.

He didn’t realize that last part until he saw one man.  One pair of haunting blue eyes beside the very man who had ruined Noah all those years ago.  One pair of frightened eyes.  One pair of hollow, hopeless eyes that Noah couldn’t have walked away from if he tried…..because someone else hadn’t walked away from him all those years ago.

Noah didn’t realize it at the time, but by saving Jesse Miller from the clutches of his ex, he was going to learn to fly….

“Fuck,” Noah whispered as he tucked back farther into the shadows and rubbed his hand over his face, as if he could scrub those memories away with a swipe of his hand.  Like that was ever going to happen.

He should walk away.  He should just fucking walk away.  Walk out of this club and leave Jacob Knight behind, like he’d done ten years ago.

But he couldn’t.

Because Morgan hadn’t.

And because he knew this kid, with those blue eyes that were so striking you could see them even in the dim lights of the club, would haunt him for the rest of his life.

He pulled out his phone and dialed.

“Hey there.  How are you doing?  I heard the Op you did was a little intense,” Morgan said when he answered the call.

Fucking Caleb.

Noah squeezed his eyes shut and took a deep breath.  Yeah that Op had been intense.  He hadn’t been expecting that.  It was supposed to be easy: pose as an escort, get fucked by the mark – Cole Gillette and place the listening device.  Easy in, get laid, easy out.  No problem, right?  But then he’d felt Cole’s turmoil, his pain, his….the way he was so haunted by the man that he’d stared at on his TV screen while he’d fucked Noah, the man whose name Cole had called when he came in the condom in Noah’s ass: Kelly.  Yeah, it’d been intense.

He chose to ignore Morgan’s comments, even though he knew the man would want to revisit them later.  Time was of the essence here.

“I need your help,” he said, getting straight to the point.

He heard Morgan suck in a breath, “Anything Noah, tell me what you need.”

“I’m at Brubakers right now.”

“Brubakers, the club?  Yeah, I know it.  Are you drunk?  Did something happen?”

“He’s here, Morgan.”

Dead silence answered him for at least half a minute.  Noah had no doubt that Morgan would know exactly who Noah was talking about without saying the man’s name.

After a mumbled curse, “Has he seen you?”

“No.”

“Get out, Noah.  Leave by the back door if you have to but get the fuck out.”

“I can’t.”

“What?  Why not?”

“He’s got someone with him, Morgan and he looks, fuck, he looks just like me,” he said, the last word coming out like a choked sob.

“You mean like a twin?”

“No, I mean like a shell, like a robot, like a dead man walking.  He can’t be more than twenty-five, Morg.  I can’t leave him here with him.  I have to help him.”

There was a quietly growled curse from Morgan and then, “Okay, I’m on my way.  But do not do anything until I get there is that understood?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“If he sees you, do not confront him.  Just run.  Am I clear?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Do not engage in any way, do you hear me?”

“Yes, Morgan, I’ve got it,” Noah said with an eyeroll.  Like he’d ever disobey any order or request from Morgan.  He and Morgan both knew that.   The idea of it almost made him snort out a laugh.

“I’ll call you when I’m in my car.  I should be there in about fifteen.”

“Okay, and Morgan?”

“Yeah?”

“Hurry.”

The call ended and Noah continued to watch the young man for a few minutes.

When someone tapped him on the shoulder, he gasped and jumped in his seat.

“Relax, I’m a friend of Morgan’s.  I’m Jake Brubaker, this is my place.  He just called me.  When he asks for my help, I don’t question, I just say yes.  What do you need?” he said as he gave Noah’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze.

Noah opened his mouth to say nothing but then he noticed that some of the servers were walking around with Brubakers ball caps on.

“Do you have any more of those hats?”

“Absolutely,” he said as he turned towards the bar, “Hey Amy, can you hand me a hat, please?”

The young woman ducked down behind the bar and then stuck her arm out to Jake, who grabbed the hat and handed it over to Noah.

“Anything else?”

“I don’t know yet.  I might need a place to hide out for a bit.”

“My office is yours.  It’s got an electronic lock on it,” he said then he told Noah the code to open it.  He looked back at Noah with a raised eyebrow as he waited.

“Can you up the alcohol content on the drinks you send to that table?” Noah said as he lifted his chin towards Jacob’s table.

Jake looked over his shoulder, “Done.”

“He’s a lawyer.  This could get….messy.”

Jake snorted a laugh, “Please, I was a prosecutor for ten years.  I used to eat assholes like him for breakfast.  Don’t worry about me or my place.”

Noah nodded to him as he pulled the hat down low over his head, “Thanks.”

“If you need anything else, just holler.  I’m always around.”

Noah nodded to him again and then watched as Jake leaned over the bar to say something to the bartender and then she added more booze to the tray of drinks on the bar in front of her.  One of the servers picked it up and brought it over to Jacob’s table.  As they were handed out, he saw the young man next to Jacob lean in and whisper something into his ear.  He watched as Jacob started to stand with him but then the other men at the table laughed and said something to Jacob that made him frown and Noah knew that they were giving him shit about not letting his boyfriend go to the bathroom by himself.  He knew it because Jacob had done the same thing to him.

After listening to the other men teasing him, Jacob turned to his young man and placed his hand on his cheek.  He leaned forward and pressed his lips to the young man’s ear and Noah knew that he was giving him explicit instructions to not make eye contact with anyone, not speak to anyone, to go in and piss, wash his hands and return to the table without haste.  Hell, even though it had been a decade, he could almost hear Jacob’s deep voice in his own ear whispering those same commands to him and a sick feeling shivered through his body like a snake.

Fuck.

This was his chance, this was going to be his only chance.  It was now or fucking never.

He didn’t turn his head, just let his eyes track the young man as he made his way through the crowd and to the darkened hall that led to the restrooms.  Then Noah’s eyes swung back to find that Jacob was doing the same thing, his eyes glued to that dark hall like a hawk.

Fucking hell.  He couldn’t slip down there now or Jacob would see him for sure.  How the fuck was he going to do this?  He was beginning to worry that he’d have to come up with another plan.

Until….

Luther stepped in front of Jacob and blocked his view.

“I brought backup.  Go,” Morgan said as he stepped up to Noah’s table and turned to watch his husband engaging Jacob and the other men at the table in conversation.

Noah knew that Luther would keep those men occupied for a while because even though Luther Santiago was no longer in his old line of work as a mob boss, he was still a highly respected, and feared, man who could command the attention of any room that he stepped into.  And he currently held the rapt attention of those six men in that booth.

Noah slid out of his corner and ducked around the wall into the dark hallway and down into the men’s restroom.

He still wasn’t sure what he was going to say when he pushed the door open and saw the young man at the urinal but he knew he had to choose the right words or the young man would be lost. Forever.

He silently closed the door behind him and took a deep breath, “I used to be you,” he said quietly.

The man’s head whipped around and the terror in his eyes broke Noah’s heart.  “What?” he whispered.

“I used to be you and he nearly killed me.”

The man’s eyes went wide and Noah could see not only the fear in them but also a thousand questions.  But he knew the man wouldn’t ask him a single one of them, though, because that was how Jacob had trained him.  Noah knew this because Jacob had trained him the same way.

“I, I’m not supposed to talk to anyone,” he mumbled as he quickly zipped up and moved over to the sink.

“What’s your name?” Noah said as he stepped closer to the man who was mumbling to himself as he washed his hands.  As Noah got closer he realized that the man was counting how many times he rubbed the soap over his hands, like Jacob had burned it into his brain that if he didn’t wash long enough he wasn’t clean.  Fucking bastard.

“J-J-J-Jesse,” the kid mumbled as he resumed his counting.

Noah stepped up to Jesse’s back and reached over to close his hands over Jesse’s, causing Jesse to hiss in a breath, “Broken ribs, three broken wrists, five concussions, two broken arms, two broken ankles, and a punctured lung from when he stabbed me with a butcher knife.”

“He, he doesn’t really hit me,” he whispered.

That surprised Noah for a brief second but then he realized…. “No, but he does other things that make you feel hopeless, helpless, humiliated.”

“I, I, I m-m-make him angry.  I’m bad.”

“No, Jesse.  I never did anything wrong and neither did you.  You don’t have to live like this.  I can help you.  Let me help you, please.”

Jesse’s tear-filled eyes looked at Noah in the mirror, “How?”

“Come with me, right now.  I’ll take you someplace safe where he’ll never find you, I promise.”

Tears spilled over onto Jesse’s cheeks as he looked down and ran his fingers over his forearm, “Yes he will, he’ll always find me.”

As Noah’s eyes darted down to Jesse’s arm, realization hit him like a freight train, “Fucking hell, Jesse, did he put a tracking device in your arm?”

Jesse silently nodded his head.

A COWBOY FOR CALEB BLURB

Falling for his deceased twin brother’s mate was never part of Dustin’s plan.

This midwestern Alpha might be a little rough around the edges, but he lives by a few simple principles and honor is chief among them.

Nonetheless, when tragedy strikes the Meadowlands Pack, Dustin feels he has no choice but to bring his twin’s mate home to take care of him. The only problem is, Caleb isn’t anything like Dustin expected of the city omega who stole his brother’s heart and divided their family.

What starts out as trying to do the right thing soon becomes a blurry series of complicated decisions that lead Dustin further away from the path he’s always followed—and further into the arms of the one omega he was never supposed to want.

Caleb has been through the worst a mated omega could fear. He’s lost his mate and their unborn child, and now he finds himself at the mercy of an Alpha who has every reason to hate him.

Despite being twins, Dustin and Caleb’s former mate, Alec, are nothing alike. Caleb wants nothing more than to please his new Alpha and secure his position in the pack, but Dustin seems to take everything he says the wrong way.

As forbidden tensions mount between Alpha and omega, Caleb begins to fear that Dustin will start taking his developing interest the right way.

Excerpt

Dustin hadn’t been prepared for Caleb to take him up on his offer to stay and help him through his heat, even though he’d made it in all sincerity. He moved a bit closer, and the moment his hands made contact with Caleb’s skin, he knew he’d bitten off more than he could chew. He tried desperately to focus on the nonsensical plot of the movie, but the more he touched Caleb and the more he felt the omega’s tight muscles relax under his attention, the harder it was to think at all.

After all, some things didn’t require a whole lot of brain power. Instinct was more than enough. It was reining in those instincts that posed the real challenge.

The soft moan that passed Caleb’s lips was the thing that caved Dustin in all at once. The omega arched his back and leaned into Dustin’s touch, their pheromones mingling together in perfect harmony, as if their bodies had already decided how the night was going to go.

“That feels so good,” Caleb breathed.

“Good,” Dustin growled. He hoped Caleb would assume he was just hoarse and not angry, but knowing the Alpha’s voice was just rough with desire was probably even worse. “You’re tense.”

Caleb froze and looked over his shoulder. His eyes were dark and heavy with lust, and if there was any doubt in Dustin’s mind that the attraction he felt was a two-way street, it was gone now. Caleb turned slowly, and before Dustin could fully process what he was doing, the omega had slipped his arms around Dustin’s neck. His fingertips grazed Dustin’s skin, raising goosebumps all over his flesh.

“I know this is wrong,” Caleb said, his voice soft and husky but full of guilt. He wouldn’t meet Dustin’s eyes, which was just as well. The Alpha knew once he did, all bets were off. He wouldn’t be able to keep the truth inside any longer. “But I — I’m just so tired of feeling alone,” he whispered, tears slipping down his cheeks.

“You’re not alone,” Dustin assured him, stroking Caleb’s cheek. “I know I haven’t been there for you the way I should have. I’m just so afraid of making a mistake. Of giving in to the way I feel about you, and leading us into something we’ll both regret.”

“How do you feel?” Caleb asked, finally meeting his eyes. His gaze was searching, needful.

Dustin swallowed hard. “I think you know by this point. I’m pretty bad at hiding it, but God knows I’ve tried.”

Caleb gave him a small, rueful smile. “Maybe I’ve just been afraid to see it. Afraid that you’ll realize I feel the same way.”

“You don’t,” Dustin said, coming back to himself for a split second. He hoped it was enough. “You’re in heat.”

Caleb laughed. It was a soft, regretful sound. “I wish I could blame it on that. Maybe then I could sleep at night without feeling like such a horrible person.”

“You’re not a horrible person.” Dustin’s thumb swept across Caleb’s lips. They were so soft. How had he gone this long without kissing them? Without touching him…? “You’re the most beautiful person I’ve ever met.”

The omega’s lips found his. This was it. This was the point of no return. If he crossed that line, if he returned the kiss, it was all over. He could no longer lay even a technical claim to goodness if he tasted the forbidden fruit and took more off the vine, but he had never felt quite as weak—or as strong—as he did with the omega in his arms.

In the end, the satin sin of Caleb’s lips brushing against his own was just too much. Dustin took the omega into his arms and his tongue slipped in past Caleb’s parted lips, taking the reins of control the way he’d always wanted. In all his wildest dreams—and Caleb had been the subject of plenty—he had never imagined giving in to temptation could taste so sweet.

Author Spotlight – S.A. Collins

A warm welcome to today’s Spotlight Author, S.A. Collins

SA COLLINS

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a gay author living in the San Francisco Bay Area. I grew up in the heady (and sometimes scary) days of the rise of gay rights movement of the 70s and 80s. I write about queer people based loosely on the exploits of myself, my husband and our many queer friends that I’ve gathered over the decades. I am married to a wonderful man who I’ve shared a home with for over 23 years with kids and (now) grandkids in the mix. We basically live the Neo-Con Republican nightmare.

What would people be most surprised to know about you?

That I come from the world of professional Opera and have a connection with Cher (not blood related, but a connection nonetheless).

How do you relax?

Reading or surfing for excellent queer content across all mediums.

Do you have a favorite quote?

The one I use at the bottom of all my email correspondence. It is from Gracie Allen and goes: “When I was born I was so surprised I didn’t speak for a whole year.”  Though I’ve been known to quote from movies religiously – Auntie Mame (with Rosaline Russell) being the most popular. It’s just filled with one liners that are absolutely biting.

How long have you been writing and what made you fall in love with writing?

I’ve been writing off and on for well over 20 years now. Maybe even before that; though not in any real meaningful way … more along the lines of just creating characters and worlds to explore in my own head.

What are your ambitions for your writing career and what’s your favorite part of writing?

While financial success would certainly be welcomed, it’s not the focus of why I write or what I hope to get out of it. Lately I’ve received several emails from readers from oppressed parts of the globe that have expressed to me what my writings have meant to them. I’ll take those moments and correspondence over any five star review rating or financial success I can gain from being a writer. In those moments you realize just how much your works have impacted someone who may just be holding on to life and need something to validate that their existence matters in this world. Those are the moments I have come to realize I am in it for. They mean the world to me. Those people in those situations I admire greatly for living as proudly as they can in a world that is often very unforgiving or accepting. After one of those encounters I am often gobsmacked for days pondering how that has affected me.

Why did you choose to write GLBTQ romance? Why not another genre?

I don’t write to genre romance tropes. I use romantic threads in my queer oriented stories. Don’t get me wrong, I think the relationships matter. But I like to explore the external forces that often push/pull those queer characters and see how they survive (or don’t) because of these often overwhelming forces. I suppose, because of my opera background, I tend to write ensemble pieces with focused relationship points – mundane people going through operatic like drama to see what they’re truly made of. I love to write about headspace. It’s an area we tend not to see too much. Queer people have to constantly poll our world – even in the best of circumstances. We are constantly checking for safety in our lives, whether we do it consciously or not. I am definitely of the Queer Lit type of writer in that I want to explore queerdom and our worlds from a very intimate (not necessarily sexual) place.

Do you write any other genre?

Yes. Currently I have a supernatural series I am working on that deals with all types of supernatural characters in a fictional town of Sparrow’s Hollow in 1956 West Virginia (where my husband hails from). I also have a contemporary series (Angels of Mercy) which examines the institutionalized homophobia in competitive sports (in this case, American high school football). I wanted to explore when an out, shy, artistic boy who hides from everyone, moving like a ghost amongst the other students, suddenly finds himself in the arms of the star quarterback of his high school. I wanted to explore this element of light and darkness. A boy who craves darkness because it guarantees his safety only to fall in love with a boy made of pure light who is noticed by everyone. It’s a sometimes harsh look at their world and the struggles they face. It is loosely based on some of my own and my husband’s (he played for Clemson U back in his day) experiences.

What scene in your writing has made you laugh the hardest or cry the most?

I have a character named Danny Jericho in the Angels of Mercy series who is a fire cracker of a guy. He’s Elliot’s and Marco’s GBF. I just don’t know what’s going to pop into his head or out of his mouth at any given time. He’s made me laugh and cry depending on the situation. A real surprise of a character from when I first created him.

Give the readers a brief summary of your latest book.

The latest release was a boxed set – I released two prequel books to my main Angels of Mercy series that told the star quarterback’s past leading up to his growing love for Elliot (the boy he’ll eventually come to love). Because Marco wants to play ball, he has to “play the game” that all athletes feel compelled to play: bag the girl, draw blood on the field, and score, score, score. But Marco is a burgeoning self-made man. As he comes to realize that the script every other guy follows without question, Marco is a man filled with nothing but questions. Only Elliot, that shy, quiet and artistic boy seems to hold all the answers for him. The road to Elliot isn’t an easy one. Despite all the wealth, fame and power Marco’s family wields in the world, none of it seems to help as he tries desperately to find a way into Elliot’s arms. Perceptions, intrigue, lies and issues of fidelity collide against the rather dramatic world of Mercy High and their football team: The Mercy High Avenging Angels.

What genre does it fall in?

Queer Lit, mostly. Each volume of the series changes perspectives and covers ground along the same timeline but from each boy’s perspective on the events that unfold in the town of Mercy, California located just outside of Big Sur. While it has strong romantic themes in the story, it hones closer to to life in that it’s messy, complicated and because there are teenagers involved, high drama reigns supreme because only teens can make things so much bigger than it is.

Share a few words about your latest book, other than the usual blurb.

It was inspired oddly enough by two things: 1) I wanted to take the tragic events of Matthew Shepard’s beating and turn it around. What would’ve happened if he survived such an event? SPOILER ALERT: Would Elliot crumble or find the courage to climb back out of the hole that Marco’s teammates would put him in? And 2) it was very heavily inspired by the musical works of Jay Brannan (who I dedicate the first book to and also make Elliot a fan of his in the series), particularly Jay’s album “Rob Me Blind” which could literally be the soundtrack to this series. If you don’t know of Jay Brannan’s work as an out queer artist, you should definitely take the time to get to know his music and his brilliant, brilliant words. He is a true modern bard of the queer experience. He was kind enough to let me quote one of his songs in the series when I saw him in concert and met him after. Something I am deeply grateful for – one queer artist supporting another. I champion him whenever I can. The two latest (boxed set) books actually carry sub-titles that are directly from Jay’s work: The King of Imperfections and The Prince of Mistakes.

Give us a little insight into your main characters. Who are they?

Each of the main characters (twin brothers – Pietro and Marco Sforza) and the boy in the center of their lives, Elliot, all have angelic names and those names embody who they are as characters. They are metaphorical as is the football team who are called the Avenging Angels (because the school used to be a Catholic school and the team name remained the same after the school became secular).

Cassiel (the angel of tears and regrets) Elliot Donahey is the out, shy, artistic boy who is the most vulnerable of the main characters. He is the boy that my readers tend to gravitate toward. While not morose or wallowing in a puddle of emotional goo, Elliot embodies the sadness that often surrounds queer youth as they struggle to find acceptance and value in the world. It isn’t an easy road to walk.

Marco Rafael Sforza is named for an arch angel – the story is really his to tell. He gets the bulk of the books in the series (three of the six in all). Of all the characters, you spend the most time in his head and discovering what’s in his heart along the way.

Pietro Azreal Sforza, Marco’s identical twin, is the personification of the angel who sits in judgment. He is judge, jury and executioner in these boys lives. Pietro is the dark horse in this race. He protects his brother and will do anything to preserve the family at all costs. These three “angels” have what I hope is a ripping read of a tale to be told that explores what being queer is all about.

Will we be seeing these characters again any time soon? Is this book part of a series?

It is part of a series. Six in all (with two prequels and a companion book to Volume 2 of the main series). Five are available now, the final book should be out by the end of this year or beginning of next. It’s proving to be a bit of a bear to write and get right because I have so many balls up in the air with the ensemble of characters involved.

Which actor would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

I actually have three male models that I’ve always seen as the main characters of this series. So their looks are really solid in my mind. The Sforza twins are based off of Troy and Travis Cannata and Elliot is based off of Paul Becigneul, although I’ve always heard Elliot’s voice as Jay Brannan (who has a very active YouTube channel). The cadence and inflections Jay puts into his YouTube videos is solidly where Elliot’s snark, humor and thread of contemplative sadness comes from.

Tell us a little bit about your writing style. When and where is your favorite time/place to write?

I love to write first person. Mostly, because I love headspace of the character. This comes from years of being involved in professional theater (under a different name). We don’t often give weight to the perceptions of our world and how they truly govern what we do and why. As queer people, we have an often different take with perceptions because, for our safety, it’s a heightened awareness as we move through life. As a writer, I love exploring that – the arguments we have with ourselves as we try to find some sliver of happiness in our worlds. Sometimes, in my works, an HEA might not be two people riding off into the sunset. Sometimes that HEA is finding self-worth, validation and respect for ourselves that we are worthy of love and sometimes that has to start with ourselves.

What sort of book do you enjoy reading in your free time?

Mostly queer lit fic. I love to hear the voices of my queer brothers and sisters out there. To know what experiences they have worked through in their lives and how it may (or may not) mirror my own. Living in the bubble of San Francisco, I realize my experiences are not like those who may live in the mid-west or even in some Islamic country. I want to know what they’re up against, how they survive, how they find love and acceptance – both in fiction and non-fiction. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy the odd MM Romance either. I am a big TJ Klune fan but come from a long line of other queer authors of the Violet Quill gang of the 70s, 80s and 90s (John Rechy, Felice Picano, Gordon Merrick, and Andrew Holleran to name a few).

What was the last book you read? What did you enjoy about it?

I am currently reading TJ Klune’s “The Long and Winding Road” – the last of the Bear, Otter and the Kid series. While I am loving it immensely, it’s also bittersweet because I know the series is coming to an end. I love Klune’s approach to character. His “Into This River I Drown” had a profound effect on me as a writer. That book is what made me take the plunge to publishing my own works.

Did you always want to be a writer? I think on some level, yes. Though it took me a long while to sort out that I could do it. Silly, really, because I have worked in printed media for so long in the professional theater community. I just never saw it for myself. That’s changed now.

Have you held any interesting jobs while you worked on your books?

Other than being an opera singer? That’s fairly unusual for a writer to put down on a bio. But my theater work has helped me because I have a long history of creating characters based on the writings of others. It’s not enough to follow a director’s stage direction to pick up the tea cup on a given line. As an actor, I need to know WHY I do it at that juncture. The motivation of character is everything.

What does your writing process look like? I run a weekly podcast (the Wrote Podcast – http://wrotepodcast.com) – that explores this topic with every author or artist we have on our show. After over a hundred episodes to our credit, we’ve discovered that, for many authors, the number of words on a page seems to be the goal of writing. How many did I get down on the digital page? Yet, I think writing goes far beyond that. Sometimes it’s the working out of plot, re-examining the dialog between two characters, looking at the world from a larger perspective to see if it all works. Those are elements of writing that won’t have a direct word count associated with them but are completely necessary to have it all work so the reader comes away with what you hoped to convey as a storyteller. So I think we need to allow ourselves, as writers, to embrace all of that. It’s what I love most about being an author. I love the creative process. Hitchcock, one of my heroes when it comes to storytelling, said that for him, creation was everything. The filming and editing and promotion was boring to him. I sort of get that. The creation is the most exciting part for me, too.

The publishing and promotion is icing on the literary cake, but it’s the world building, the character creations, the emotional relationships that are explored that is the real cake you’re cooking up for the reader. And like baking, there is a real sort of science behind it all. Sure, you may tell your story a certain way, give it your own spin, but ultimately we are in the business of communication – and to do that you really need to have the courage to deeply examine what you’re doing and the why of it to get it right. I think that’s something that can’t be faked for a reader … they’ll spot that a mile coming.

Thank you for sharing more about yourself.

Diary Set Synopsis:

Born in America but reared in their father’s home of Torino, Italy, Marco Sforza has led a fairly idyllic life. The Sforzas are an ancient and powerful family with a strong ducal past. They run a vast global empire that allows Marco to enter halls of power that most men only dream of. Yet, Marco is a boy who lives in a bubble of his family’s making.

When Marco returns to America to attend high school he grooms himself to become a rising star quarterback of the Mercy High Avenging Angels. He thinks his focus is his burgeoning football career. He is all too aware he is a boy made of pure light that is meant to be seen and noticed. He is comfortable there. Until he meets a boy who shines brighter than him. Elliot Donahey is that boy. But Elliot is a boy who craves shadow and darkness to keep himself safe through another hellish day of high school.

Before he realizes it, Marco’s world becomes undone by this boy. Trapped in a script all jocks are meant to follow, Marco does his best to fit in and play along so he can play the game he loves. But this boy who hides in the shadows begins to consume his every thought and emotion.

Despite the script he’s been given to date girls, have sex, and hang with his teammates and follow along, Marco finds himself on an emotional pendulum where following that jock script only brings him further away from that world to circle the boy hiding in the shadows. Can Marco find it within himself to push against what others expect of him to find his way into Elliot’s arms? Even with all the fame, money and prestige his family brings to the table, will it be enough to gain the interest of a boy who only wants to hide from everyone?

Author Bio

SA “Baz” Collins hails from the San Francisco Bay Area where he lives with his husband, their daughter and wonder of all wonders, a whirlwind of a granddaughter and two exotic cats. A classically trained singer/actor (under a different name), Baz knows a good yarn when he sees it.

Based on years of his work as an actor, Baz specializes in character study pieces. It is more important for him as an author that the reader comes away with a greater understanding of the characters, and the reasons they make the decisions they do, rather than the situations they are in. It is this deep dive into their manners, their experiences and how they process the world around them that make up the body of Mr. Collins’ work.

Author Spotlight ~ Matt Converse

MATT CONVERSE

I’d like to offer a warm welcome to Matt Converse

Please introduce yourself and your writing.

I’m Matt Converse of San Francisco and write horror, thriller, mystery, erotica and m/m romance. I was first published by Comet Press in 2015 with my m/m erotic thriller Behind the Velvet Curtain. This year, Encompass Ink published the prequel, Strip Shot. My next release is an erotic horror thriller, Leather Head, due October 14th, just in time for Halloween.

How long have you been writing for, and what inspired you to start writing?

I wrote my first short story at age eight about a boy who dreams of walking to a graveyard and finding an open grave that has his headstone on it. My teacher asked if I copied it from TV or a movie. I was flattered and have been writing ever since.

Tell us about your new release. What inspired you to write it?

Strip Shot is the prequel to my first release, Behind the Velvet Curtain. Readers asked for a sequel but I thought a prequel was called for first to show the main character’s coming of age journey to becoming a stripper. Both books are based on some of my own real life experiences as a stripper.

001ss

What are you working on at present? Would you like to share a snippet?

I’m current working on the sequel to Behind the Velvet Curtain. I’m afraid a snippet might be a spoiler but for those who wanted to know more about “The Creeper”, fasten your seat-belts!

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Do what you love and remember every no is one step closer to a yes. I was turned down many times before being published, just like the stories you hear about famous authors like Stephen King. It’s true.

Are there any genres you prefer to write and if so, why?

I am a horror writer at heart I think because my Mom turned me on to scary movies on Friday nights as a kid. I fell into the m/m romance erotica category simply by subject matter. My story of an Ohio boy turned San Francisco stripper who is stalked by an obsessed fan is more thriller than anything, but the characters just happen to be gay.

What book are you reading at the moment?

I haven’t started it yet, but Psycho by Robert Bloch. I want to see how it differs from the movie directed by my idol. Alfred Hitchcock.

What other novels do you adore/ writers you follow?

I have been a fan of Stephen King since I was young, he’s one of my idols.

Are any of your characters based on you or people you know?

Yes, my main character in both published books are based on myself. It’s fiction but many things are based on my own life experiences as a stripper. I wanted to portray a real, gritty look at the life of a stripper.

Do you have a favourite character and/or book you’ve written? Who, what and why?

I love “The Creeper” in Behind the Velvet Curtain. I guess it’s my love of horror.

Do you write often? Do you have a schedule?

I don’t have a schedule, but I’m a night owl so it’s usually very late at night. I don’t write every day but on the days I do write I’m almost the happiest.

What are your writing and personal goals for 2017 and beyond?

I have two novellas published, so my goal is having a full length novel published.

If you could choose any superpower or magical ability, what would it be and why? What would you do with it?

I love my dreams of flying so I’d go with that to see if it is as magical as it is in my dreams.

Thank you for telling us more about yourself.

Interview Prompts…

The prized possession you value above all others… I would have to say my most prized possession is my computer. It holds so many ideas for future books as well as every manuscript I’ve ever written. Without it I would be lost and unable to work and since I love my work that would be devastating.

The unqualified regret you wish you could amend… I wish I had spent more time with her before she died. She had a stroke three years prior to her death and after the stroke I couldn’t see the person who raised me in her eyes any longer. It made it difficult to spend time with her but I should have done it anyway.

The temptation you wish you could resist… Sugar, plain and simple. I have a terrible sweet tooth.

The book that holds everlasting resonance… Brightside by Kim Holden moved me deeply. It showed me how beautiful and positive people can be even in the face of adversity.

The priority activity if you were invisible for a day… Oh, this is easy. I would hang out in my teenage daughter’s room and find out what she’s doing up there all the time.

The film you can watch time and time again… Okay now, don’t judge, but I can, and do, watch the Twilight series over and over. I love it and if I’ve gone too long without seeing it I’ll sit down and binge watch all five movies in a row.

The person who influenced you the most… My grandmother made me the person I am today. Without her love and guidance I don’t know what would have become of me.

The unlikely interest that engages your curiosity… The first thing that popped into my mind when I read this question was, strangely enough, writing. I wanted to be a nurse ever since I was a little girl and that is what I went to college for. Writing came straight out of left field. If you had told me five years ago that I would be quitting my job at the hospital to become a full time author I would have laughed in your face.

The poem that touches your soul… Sticks and stones will build your thrones but love lives ever after. Atticus.

The event that altered the course of your life… My mother’s death when I was nine years old. Nothing has been the same since.

The happiest moment you will cherish forever… There are several, every time I had a child felt like the happiest moment of my life.

The unfulfilled ambition that continues to haunt you… Finding true love.

The way you would spend your fantasy twenty-four hours, with no travel restrictions… I would want to see England and France but with only twenty-four hours I would have to choose England.

The pet hate that makes your hackles rise… Mouth noises make me gag and crinkling wrappers in a quiet room makes me want to scream. OMG just stop!

The figure from history you would most like to buy a pie and a pint… Mary Queen of Scots. She was such a heroic, strong willed woman who fought for what she felt was right even when those around her tried to convince her differently.

The piece of wisdom you would pass onto a child… Love more. Judge less.

The treasured item you lost and wish you could have again… I didn’t lose it; it was stolen from me, but my mother’s wedding ring.

The crime you would commit knowing you could get away with it… I would rig the lottery so I would win the Powerball!

The character you enjoyed writing the most… I wrote a story about an alpha male who was the wealthy owner of a chain of restaurants all over the world. He was damaged and brooding but when he met the protagonist he wanted to be a better man. To me that’s what love is all about, two people who are better when they are together.

The character you found difficult to write… It might sound odd but writing happy well-rounded characters is difficult for me. I don’t know many people who are genuinely happy and that makes them feel foreign to write.

The book you enjoyed planning/writing the most… The story about the alpha male I spoke of earlier. It was a trilogy that I put my heart and soul into. I was invested in those characters. I loved them. I knew them inside and out, they felt like my friends and family. I still miss them.

Sam Hayward’s parents think he has a boyfriend. And he does… in his dreams. But when they insist Sam bring his partner to the annual Labor Day family reunion, his options are to either admit it was all a lie or find a stand-in in a hurry. The trouble is that his lies have all been based on one very real man.

Ben Matheny has been hurt before. When he’s bribed into playing a part by his friends, he fleshes out Sam’s dreams, but it’s like flying too close to the sun. He’s always had a crush on Sam, and now they’re going to the Hamptons to spend a week pretending they’re lovers, everything is getting harder.

When Ben uncovers another lie Sam has told – that Ben is every bit as rich as Sam is – things begin to unravel. If Sam isn’t happy with who Ben is, Ben can’t stick around to get burned again.

With their hearts on the line, the two must fight for their dreams as the pressure mounts. It would be so easy to admit that it was all a sham, but some dreams are worth the risk.

EXPOSURE BLURB

Excerpt

“Guess we have the hot tub all to ourselves,” Ben said with a smile.

He didn’t know whether he meant the words to be flirtatious or not. It was one thing to flirt when there were other people present. That was just what he did, how he interacted with people. Deliberately flirting with Sam was different. Dangerous.

“Guess we do.”

Sam’s voice was lower than usual. Almost seductive. There was no one around that would make Sam feel like he had to play the part of the boyfriend, which meant only one thing: Sam was actually into him. The signs were all there, if Ben was reading them correctly—the way Sam had taken to holding his hand, the morning wood after cuddling all night long, the look Sam had given him when he’d seen Ben in the shorts. And then there was that thing he had started to say right before they had gotten on the boat.

Much as Ben wanted to believe that Sam might have feelings for him too, there was still a part of him that wasn’t sure. There was certainly one way for him to find out, though. The hot tub was big enough for about six people, so naturally they had taken corners along the same wall. Slowly, Ben moved closer and closer to Sam, until they were sitting side by side. He took a deep breath, steeling his nerves, and let his leg brush against Sam’s.

“What are you doing?” Sam’s voice was low and husky, and when Ben looked up, he found Sam’s pupils so large that only a sliver of hazel showed around the edges.

He swallowed hard. “Getting closer to you.”

His heart beat so fast that his chest ached as he waited for Sam to do something. Say something. Have any reaction at all. It had been so easy when it was just flirting, but this…this was terrifying.

Seconds passed, though, and Sam didn’t move away. Instead, he leaned back against the side of the hot tub and slid his hand into Ben’s, underneath the water.

“I’m glad you’re here,” he said softly.

Encouraged by the reaction, Ben shifted down a bit and let his head rest on Sam’s shoulder. “Me too.” They sat in silence for a few seconds. Ben didn’t want to ruin the moment, but he knew that if he didn’t say anything, he would regret it. “Before, when we were about to get on the boat. What were you going to say?”

“I um…” Sam scratched at the back of his neck. “I was going to say, what if—”

“Sammy, Benny!”

Ben whipped around to see Karrigan. Someone had escaped from nap time. He fought to suppress a groan. Looked like this conversation would have to wait.
