HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, JASPER

JASPER AND I first became friends at school. He moved into the area when he was thirteen and, as he was shy, I took him under my wing to protect him from the school bullies. No one dared mess with Nathan Collins and his gang. We hit it off straight away and became best buddies within a matter of weeks. The other lads, especially Kieran and Jack, were pissed off at first, but what could they say? Jasper became part of our clique, and there was nothing they could do about it. Well, they could take a hike, but I knew they wouldn’t do that.

Sometimes, it would be a group of us hanging out, but more often, it became just the two of us. We completed our homework together in our bedrooms, spent weekends in the woods hiking, or camping out in the summer months. We did everything together. Hell, we even volunteered to sweep up the autumn leaves for our parents so we could spend an afternoon with each other. Nothing could separate us. We remained friends at school for the next five years. We didn’t want or need girlfriends. We never argued. We never fell out. We just wanted to spend time together.

There were whispers, of course, but I ignored them. I knew there was nothing funny going on between us—we were best buddies. Jasper surprised me when he punched Kieran on the nose because of some snide comment he’d made. Luckily, Kieran didn’t snitch on Jasper to the headmaster. He claimed he’d bumped his nose during basketball training. However, there were no more mutterings about us from that day onwards.

We were seventeen before we had our first major disagreement. Jasper wanted to go out with a crowd of students to celebrate the end of the school year. I wanted the two of us to go to the cinema. Sulkily, I said I’d give the evening a miss. I could see he was cross with me, but he let it go without saying another word.

In the end, nearly everyone backed out for one reason or another, so it was just Jasper and Sean who planned to go alone to a pizza restaurant. I don’t know why I did it, but I decided to call another friend, Carlton, at the last minute to see if he wanted to go to the cinema with me. As luck would have it, Jasper and Sean decided to go to the cinema after their meal as well. I didn’t realise until much later that they were sitting about ten rows behind us all night.

After dropping Carlton off, I pulled into my driveway and saw Jasper waiting for me in his car. I could tell by his face he was seething but didn’t understand why. He got out and slammed the door shut before marching over to me.

“Did you have a good night?” He stared intently at me.

Puzzled, I said, “Yes, did you?”

He didn’t answer me as we made our way into my house. My parents were out, so we took some cans of soda from the fridge and headed to my room.

“So, Carlton’s your best buddy now, then?” His face settled into a nasty sneer. This was totally unlike Jasper.

“Err… no, I just went to see a movie with him. Anyway, you went out with Sean,” I hurled back at him. We were jealous, but at the time, we didn’t know what we were feeling.

I slammed the door. Jasper let out a sob, which startled me. Until that point, I thought he was angry with me. I’d never seen him cry before.

“Jasper, what’s the matter?” I moved nearer to him. He turned from me, shaking his head, and I assumed he was going to leave.

“Don’t go.” I reached out to him.

“Why? What do you care?”

Putting my hand on his shoulder, I eased him around and managed to pull him close. His head rested on my shoulder, and he held me against his body. We stayed like that for some time, neither of us saying anything or moving. It felt so good; I didn’t want him to pull away.

I felt a slight tickle on my neck at first, moving up towards my jaw before I realised what was happening. Jasper tilted his face towards mine. His lips brushed over my skin, leaving a seemingly scorching trail towards my mouth. He pulled back. His stormy blue eyes locked with mine, asking, pleading, questioning. I wasn’t sure exactly what he was asking, but I nodded, and his lips met mine hesitantly for a second or two. Pulling away slightly, he smiled before our lips connected again. This time it was for longer. It felt so right.

Jasper groaned. Our kiss deepened. The tip of his tongue sought entrance to my mouth, and I parted my lips to welcome him. My first kiss and one I will never forget. As our kissing became less awkward, our hands and hips moved, pulling each other closer. Soon we were panting. Our excitement rose as we crushed our bodies together.

Excerpt from

OVER THE RAINBOW

THE BELL sounded to signal the end of the school day.

At last.

Dorian let out a huge sigh of relief. He quickly dismissed his boisterous pupils and logged himself off the computer on his desk by the time they’d all noisily exited the classroom.

God! What a day!

Anyone who thought this job was easy should try teaching Pride and Prejudice to a class of fifteen-year-old boys. And damn it, he still had the bloody staff meeting to attend before he got to go home.

Dorian scooped up his teaching notes and a pile of books he hadn’t managed to mark at lunchtime and strode out of the classroom barely missing two boys who ran past him. “Walk in the corridor!” he instructed the rapidly fleeing flash of emerald green uniforms, but to little effect.

Dorian sighed again and looked down at the books in his arms.

Yet another fun-filled night with hardly any time to relax.

He wished he’d believed the person who’d told him his social life would be almost non-existent during his first year of teaching. Marking, planning, staff meetings, talking to parents, in addition to after-school activities two or three times a week. Bring back college days any time. At least he’d had something he could laughingly call a sex life then.

Thank God it was the half-term break next week. Time to draw breath for a few days at least.

Dorian slowed his pace as he passed the adjacent classroom and glanced hopefully inside. His search was rewarded. Catching sight of the object of his desire made his stomach flutter.

“Hey, Dorian. Have you got a minute before the staff meeting starts?”

Dorian flushed a little and smiled. “Sure.” He glanced appreciatively over his mentor, Mr Leonard. “I wanted to ask you a few questions about my lesson observation tomorrow if you’ve got time.”

Mr Leonard, Head of the English department, was everything Dorian wished he could be—and not just because of the expert control he had over the pupils. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and most of his exposed skin was covered in thick, dark hair that Dorian spent most nights dreaming about; he often imagined what the hairs would feel like if he ran his hands over Mr Leonard’s skin and what this hunk of a man would look like naked.

“That’s fine, D. Let’s grab a cuppa and talk on the way.”

Dorian nodded and shifted the books in his arms so most of his suddenly bulging groin was now covered. The very thought of calling Mr Leonard ‘Sir’ was enough to harden his traitorous dick at the most inopportune moments. He usually thought of Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett at times like these, but those thoughts often turned to Mr Bingley and a wet-shirted Mr Darcy, and he was no better off.

Dorian did his best to concentrate on their conversation, focusing on Mr Leonard’s eyes and lips as they discussed his lesson for class 5B the following day. “And I want you to speak up in the staff meeting today….”

“Yes, Mr Leonard.”

“Look, Dorian, it’s about time you called me Mark. We’ve been working together for over six weeks now.”

Dorian smiled again, his cock pulsing when his name fell from the older man’s lips. He’d never liked the name his parents had given him and had to suffer being called everything from Dory to Ryan in his teen years, but hearing Mark say it sent a shiver down his spine every time. “Sure. If that’s okay with you, Mark.”

Mr Leonard—Mark—paused as they approached the staffroom and huffed. “Of course, it is but not in front of the little Munchkins, though.” Dorian chuckled at Mark’s nickname for the pupils.

TERRY caught sight of his reflection in the shop window and smoothed down his wind-blown hair. He glanced up and down, checking over his appearance. A smile grazed his mouth. Pleased he’d chosen a tight-fitting T-shirt to exhibit his firm torso, he shifted his attention to the clothing displayed on the other side of the glass. A pale blue shirt instantly caught his attention as did a cream-coloured shirt with a dusky paisley print. Both would complement his tanned complexion.

Terry needed a new shirt for a party later that evening, but that wasn’t the reason he was standing in front of this designer boutique. A flutter of excitement rippled through his belly and travelled down to his groin. Blood rushed to his dick, making it throb in anticipation. It wasn’t the clothing that had his heart racing, but the thought of a particular sales assistant who worked in this chic menswear shop.

It was late on Saturday afternoon, and the shop would be closing up for the day within the next half an hour. He didn’t have long to carry through his carefully planned move. Terry hoped he’d timed his entrance just right. Peering beyond the male mannequins poised elegantly in the window, he searched out his intended target.

Two of the sales assistants were preparing to leave the shop, so Terry moved towards the door. As it opened, an old-fashioned bell jangled overhead, and the two men exited the premises.

“Hello,” Terry said to them.

“Good evening, sir.” They both offered him a knowing grin, and one winked at Terry, who returned the gesture.

Terry watched them walk hand in hand down the street for a few seconds before crossing over the threshold. He couldn’t contain the smile that spread across his face because now only one member of staff remained to man the shop until it closed at half past five.

The one guy he wanted the chance to be alone with.

The one guy he lusted after.

Ash.

Author Spotlight – Dale Cameron Lowry

A warm welcome to today’s Spotlight Author,

Dale Cameron Lowry, editor of Myths, Moons, and Mayhem.

Thank you for joining us and sharing more about yourself.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT DLC

Tell us a little about yourself.

I grew up in western Europe and the eastern United States. I learned Spanish along with English and, for the longest time, thought the first line of “The Star-Spangled Banner” was “José, can you see?” and that this José was an angel—the same one referred to in all those Christmas hymns as “José Josana!”

I learned the actual words to “The Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America” by listening to Yankee Doodle Mickey over and over again during the summer before my first year of school in the United States. By the time fall rolled around, I knew most of the songs better than my classmates. Guess I didn’t have to cram so hard!

Today I’m a writer and migraneur in the American Midwest, in a state that used to govern by the motto “Forward!” but now governs by the motto “Backward!” Besides moving somewhere else, my top goals in life are getting my cat to stop eating the dish towels and writing things that make people feel like they’re not alone in the world.

Oh, and also getting married, like, pronto. Last month, our legislature removed most legal recognitions for my domestic partnership (and everyone else’s) effective at the end of the calendar year. Because apparently if we all have the right to marry now, we must marry at shotgun speed. At least according to Wisconsin.

As stressful as all that is, an emergency wedding sounds like it would make a good basis for a romance novel! Maybe I’ll write one on that theme after the dust settles …

Give the readers a brief summary of your latest book.

My latest book isn’t just mine. It’s the work of nine different authors who each wrote paranormal short stories featuring gay/MMM ménages a trois. I gathered and edited these erotic tales into an anthology called Myths, Moons & Mayhem.

I had so much fun putting this collection together. It has the paranormal creatures you’d typically expect—werewolves, vampires, ghosts—but it’s also got aliens, Bigfoot, and even a fae lord or two. A couple stories don’t have any supernatural beings at all, just ordinary humans interacting with the world of magic. For the reader, it’s like going out on Halloween night and coming back with a basketful of all different kinds of treats—each story is unique, and each is delectable.

What genre does it fall in?

The stories in Myths, Moons, and Mayhem are all paranormal gay ménage and falls somewhere between erotica and erotic romance. They’re all incredibly sexy, most have a romantic aspect to the three-man relationship, and all have happy endings. Since they’re short stories, you don’t get the complete romantic arc of a 60,000-word erotic romance novel, but there’s still a lot of love between these pages.

To be honest, a lot of these stories got me in the feels as much as any romance novel!

Why did you choose to write GLBTQ romance? Why not another genre?

I do write other genres, but I like writing about queer people because I’m queer myself and want to read more stories about people who share that in common with me. I end up writing romance a lot because I especially want to read happy stories—most of the ones I had access to growing up ended up sadly, or at least with a lot of tragedy between the pages.

Two exceptions I can think of are Maurice by E.M. Forster, which I loved and still do, and Annie on My Mind by Nancy Garden, which a lot of people love but wasn’t for me, because at the time it hurt to read about queer teenagers finding their happily ever after when I didn’t even know where to meet any! (I’m a child of the 1980s.) I mostly wanted to read about adults falling in love, because I could envision that as my future. It would be interesting to go back and read Annie on My Mind to see if I enjoyed it more now.

How do you relax?

Taking pictures of animals, from insects to fish to birds and beyond. I don’t like to take pictures of people; unless you’re dealing with actors, it can become an awkward because the usual rules of social interaction don’t apply. But animals don’t pose and don’t pay much attention to me beyond eyeing me up as potential predator or prey.

The other reason I like photographing animals is that it requires a lot of focus. The animal isn’t posing for me, so I need to be in the moment, ready to take a shot at the exact instant the animal does something interesting.

It doesn’t matter how long my to-do list is or how stressed out I am. If I leave the house/home office with my camera and find something to take pictures of, I will forget about my human obligations for a while.
